It was more than sweating plasma with women & men contesting in the Uganda indoor rowing championships over the weekend at the Amrap sports club.
The two day’s indoor game attracted over twenty participates or rowers from different rowing clubs including champions on the Uganda rowing national team, Sharifu Lukwango & Okello Darius.
The game saw ladies challenging the men and these ladies included Namukwaya Nusufu & Ingabire Cinderalla who attracted lots of attention.
The ladies sweated plasma while challenging the men in pulling the ‘ergometer’ machines during the indoor game.
Phionah Katushabe was the best overall female performer at the championships in the women’s 500m sprints.
Rowers from different organizations & clubs put up a spirited contest following a 2days event at the Amrap sports club.
Uganda Rowing Vice President Ivan Dean Odongo called on former Secretary General Batenga Nakisozi to hand over six ergometers which he said were in her possession, so they could be used by the rowing community.
He appealed for the equipment to be made available in the spirit of the sport and for the benefit of those taking part.
Despite the difficulties at the start, the championships delivered two days of competition and successful finish.
The weekend highlighted two priorities including bringing more women into rowing and making well-maintained equipment available to the wider rowing community.
Uganda Rowing Secretary General Geofrey Kayovu expressed concern about the low number of women taking part with only five ladies out of the 31 participants.
The Rowing Cranes crew, captained by Darius Okello, brought together Okello, Sharifu “Lusha” Lukwago, Joel Luyimbazi and Pius Kigundu, with Henry Ssemugooma as coach.
