Police in Busia have arrested 11 suspects in a crackdown on butcheries allegedly dealing in meat from stolen livestock and selling uninspected animal products.
The suspects were arrested on Monday during an intelligence-led operation targeting butcheries in Arubaina, Sofia, Nangwe, Solo B and Busia Main Market in Busia Municipality.
The operation was led by the Busia Municipality Veterinary Officer in coordination with security agencies following investigations into a suspected livestock theft network.
Authorities had earlier deployed sniffer dogs to identify butcheries suspected of receiving meat from stolen animals.
Some operators reportedly abandoned their businesses after detecting the presence of the dogs, making it difficult for police to make arrests.
During the latest operation, the team recovered meat from goats and cattle that had not been stamped for inspection. Turkey and chicken products were also recovered.
Police also seized weighing scales, stones, pangas and other items that investigators believe could assist in the ongoing inquiry.
The suspects were taken to Busia Central Police Station for processing and were charged with stealing cattle.
The Flying Squad was also involved in the operation as police intensified investigations into suspected livestock theft and the illegal sale of animal products in Busia Town.
