The High Court in Kampala has sentenced Haruna Kalyowa to 40 years’ imprisonment after convicting him of defiling his 12-year-old biological daughter.
Justice David Matovu handed down the sentence following evidence that Kalyowa sexually assaulted the girl at their home in Sembule Zone, Kabowa Parish, Rubaga Division, Kampala, in 2021.
Prosecution led by Senior State Attorney Carol Tabaro told court that the girl was living with Kalyowa and her stepmother when the offence occurred.
Court heard that the stepmother left home to take her baby for immunization.
While she was away, Kalyowa allegedly sexually assaulted his daughter.
The prosecution said the incident was interrupted when the stepmother returned after realizing that she had left the baby’s immunization card at home.
She allegedly found Kalyowa in the act.
Kalyowa subsequently moved to another residence in the same parish.
The victim later disclosed that the abuse had happened more than four times.
In 2023, she resisted further advances and told a school friend what she had been experiencing.
The information was later brought to adults, including her biological mother, and Kalyowa was arrested in June 2023.
Kalyowa denied the allegations in court and blamed them on family wrangles.
The prosecution presented seven witnesses to prove its case.
After considering the evidence, the High Court found Kalyowa guilty of defilement and sentenced him to 40 years in prison.
