The Uganda Cancer Institute (UCI), in partnership with the Uganda Child Cancer Foundation (UCCF), Hazel, and Amara held a vibrant celebration to mark Childhood Cancer Survivorship Day.

The event shone a spotlight on children and young people who have successfully completed cancer treatment, honoring their courage and resilience while inspiring hope for those still on their treatment journey.

The day began with an exciting red carpet walk, where survivors proudly showcased their strength and determination. This symbolic moment was followed by the ringing of the bell in the pediatric ward—a cherished tradition that marks the completion of cancer treatment and a new chapter of life for survivors.

Presiding over the ceremony was Dr. Racheal Angom, Assistant Head of the Division of Pediatrics at UCI, who underscored the importance of survivorship as part of the broader cancer care journey.

Dr. Angom also officially handed over certificates of survivorship to the children, a gesture that recognized their triumph over the disease and encouraged them to look ahead with confidence and hope.

In her remarks, Dr. Angom highlighted the critical role of early detection, treatment, and support systems in improving childhood cancer outcomes in Uganda.

She further acknowledged the survivors’ families, healthcare teams, and partners such as UCCF, Hazel, and Amara for their unwavering dedication to supporting children through some of their toughest battles.

The celebration was both joyful and deeply symbolic, reminding all participants that childhood cancer is not a death sentence.

With timely access to care, strong partnerships, and continuous support, more children can live healthy, fulfilling lives after cancer.

The Uganda Cancer Institute reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening childhood cancer care and survivorship programs, ensuring that every child has the opportunity not only to survive cancer but also to thrive.
