Uganda Cranes have unveiled their squad for the upcoming double-header against Botswana in the AFCON 2027 qualifiers, with five locally based players earning call-ups and former captain Khalid Aucho featuring on the list despite having previously announced his retirement from international football.

The Cranes will face Botswana on 14 November 2026 in Uganda before travelling for the return fixture on 17 November 2026, with both matches set to play a crucial role in their qualification campaign.

Five Local Players Make the Squad

Five players from Uganda’s domestic league have earned places in the squad, highlighting the contribution of local clubs to the national team.

The locally based players are David Lukwago (SC Villa), Jonathan Odongo (Entebbe UPPC FC), Herbert Achayi (KCCA FC) and Frank Ssebufu (SC Villa).

Their inclusion provides an opportunity for the local contingent to compete alongside foreign-based professionals as the Cranes prepare for the two encounters.

Aucho’s Inclusion Raises Questions

One of the major talking points is the inclusion of former captain Khalid Aucho, who previously announced his retirement from international football.

The midfielder’s presence on the squad list raises questions about his international future and whether he has reconsidered his retirement decision. Further clarification would be needed to confirm his current status.

Foreign-Based Stars Also Included

The squad features experienced goalkeeper Denis Onyango, defender Toby Sibbick, midfielder Allan Oyirwoth and forwards James Bogere, Travis Mutyaba, Rogers Mato and Sadam Masereka, among other professionals playing abroad.

Uganda will aim to make home advantage count in the first leg before travelling to Botswana for the return fixture.

With two matches scheduled within three days, preparation, squad depth and consistency will be vital as the Cranes pursue qualification for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

The spotlight will be on Uganda’s preparations, the five locally based players and Aucho’s inclusion as the November double-header approaches.
