KAMPALA — The Parliamentary Committee on Physical Infrastructure has summoned Works and Transport Minister Fred Byamukama to appear before it and provide explanations on the rising number of road accidents and the growing concern over contractors who have abandoned road construction projects in different parts of the country.

The committee is expected to examine the factors contributing to road crashes and assess the government’s response in improving road safety, particularly at a time when road users continue to raise concerns over fatalities, traffic enforcement and the condition of some roads.

Members of Parliament will also seek details on delayed and incomplete road projects, including the circumstances under which contractors stopped work, the status of existing contracts and what measures are being taken to ensure the projects are completed.

Road infrastructure remains a key part of Uganda’s development plans, with major investments directed towards improving connectivity and supporting trade.

However, delays in implementation, rising construction costs, contractual disagreements and supervision challenges have affected the progress of some projects.

The minister’s appearance before the committee is expected to provide lawmakers with an opportunity to review the ministry’s management of road safety programmes and the implementation of infrastructure projects funded by taxpayers.
