The Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, on Saturday, August 1, 2026 presided over the unveiling of a statue at the Old Terminal in commemoration of the 50th Anniversary since Isreali commander, Jonathan Netanyahu, lost his life in a daring rescue mission for air transport hostages at Entebbe International Airport.

The rescue mission, which was code named “Operation Yonatan” took place on 4th July 1976.

The bravery exhibited by the Commander of the operation ensured that his legacy continues to resonate through time, hence the commemorative event

“We are celebrating the fact that more than 100 hostages who were held here in that old tower building at gunpoint were rescued,” Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA) Deputy Director General, Ms Olive Birungi Lumonya stated.

Uganda Government dignitaries and the Isreal delegation attended the event.

In 2016, Entebbe International Airport was privileged to host the 40th Anniversary of the rescue mission and Israeli Prime Minister, H.E. Benjamin Netanyahu attended the historic event and participated in the official commemoration ceremony.
