The Anti-Corruption Court in Kampala has remanded a man accused of offering Shs8 million to police officers guarding a crime scene linked to the alleged theft of 785 kilogrammes of gold.
Kayiwa Amir was charged with offering gratification and remanded until September 30, when he is expected to return to court for mention of the case.
Prosecution alleges that on August 29, Kayiwa offered the money to police officers at Lubowa, Kajjansi Town Council in Wakiso District.
The court heard that the money was intended to secure access to the office of Asimwe Emmanuel at Details Security Company Ltd, where Kayiwa allegedly intended to remove vital evidence.
The alleged bribery came after a complaint was lodged over the disappearance of 785 kilogrammes of gold from the company’s premises.
Police and the anti-corruption unit subsequently secured and cordoned off the premises as investigations into the alleged theft got under way.
Kayiwa’s prosecution followed a joint investigation by the anti-corruption unit, the Criminal Investigations Directorate and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
The court remanded him until September 30, when the case will come up for mention.
