On a tense Sunday afternoon in Kabale, Kigezi Homeboyz FC turned a routine-looking victory into a statement of endurance in the FUFA Big League promotion race.
At Kigezi Al-Madina Stadium, the hosts wrote the first chapter with authority. Henry Kitegenyi, still fresh ink on the team sheet after arriving on loan from Mbarara City, struck in the 32nd minute with the calmness of a player already at home.
Moments before the halftime whistle, Dominic Abonga stretched the advantage, handing the Gorillas a comfortable cushion and the crowd a sense of inevitability.
But football rarely travels in straight lines.
Nebbi Central FC returned from the break with renewed bite, and when they pulled one back in the 80th minute, the mood shifted from cruise control to survival mode.
The final minutes became a test of nerve, structure, and belief. Kigezi Homeboyz bent under pressure, but crucially, they did not break.
That resilience may prove more valuable than the goals themselves.
Elsewhere, the promotion chessboard tilted in their favour. Blacks Power FC faltered, slipping to a 1-0 defeat against Ntugasaze FC, a result that allowed Kigezi to leapfrog into top spot with 42 points.
Blacks Power now trail on 39, while Ntugasaze’s surge to 37 tightens the race further.
Across the league, contenders kept trading blows. Kataka FC strengthened their case with a 2-0 win over CATDA FC, while Kiyinda Boys delivered one of the day’s most emphatic performances, brushing aside Onduparaka 3-0.
Wakiso Giants edged Iganga United in a narrow 2-1 contest, and Bunyaruguru United made a loud statement with a 3-0 victory over Young Elephants.
Elsewhere, Soltilo Bright Stars and Mbale Heroes, as well as Kaaro Karungi and Paidha Black Angels, settled for shared spoils.
For Kigezi Homeboyz, though, this was more than just another win.
It was a glimpse into their championship temperament, the ability to seize control early, absorb late storms, and walk away still standing at the summit.
As the season edges toward its climax, the Gorillas are no longer just chasing promotion. They are beginning to look like a team others must now chase.
