Uganda’s budding music spin master Micheal Benjamin Owor will be missed on the social calendar following his sudden death on Thursday morning at his residence in Entebbe.

News of his passing on sent ripples down the spin with tributes pouring in from fans across the continent.

DJ Bush Baby was found dead inside his bedroom after going missing for days without storming his usual hangouts and meeting buddies.

His wife reportedly raised the alarm when he stopped breathing and on his death bed.

According to relatives, DJ Bush Baby was found in his bedroom, after having gone missing for two days.

The influential deejay, who shaped East Africa’s modern music scene in the early 2000s was found lifeless at his residence in Bugonga sub-ward.

Bebe Cool, a longtime friend is heartbroken and mourned him in a heartfelt post on twitter, “What a sad day, you inspired many with your work including myself”.

“Many East African artists are who they are because of you. Your sudden death is a big blow. But we are comforted by the fact that your legacy leaves on”, noted Bebe.

Bush Baby was among the first Ugandan deejays to bring hip hop, R&B, and urban contemporary music to the local airwaves in the late 1990s.

He began his career at Radio Uganda’s Green Channel, now known as Magic FM, before his voice and musical taste traveled far beyond Uganda’s borders.

In Tanzania, he played a central role in shaping urban radio and he helped set up Kiss FM and became a defining presence at East African Radio and East African Television (Channel 5).

His flagship show, Uganda Central, was more than just a playlist and it was a cultural bridge.

He also co-hosted Friday Night Live on both radio and TV, a program that earned a regional following.

Another show, 5 Live, which he hosted alongside Bobby Mongi, featured live audiences and interactive content, a format still rare in the region at the time.

“He really believed in the power of media to connect East Africa,” said one longtime colleague who worked with him during the early 2000s.

“Bush wasn’t just playing music, he was a man of substance in changing the regional music charts to modern times”, noted media.

In Uganda and beyond, DJ Bush Baby wasn’t just a voice on the airwaves, he was a bridge between cultures and sounds.

“Owor’s legacy spans decades and no one will replace your seat until we meet again, But we are comforted by the fact that your legacy is solid and candid from shaping playlists to mentoring  new generational deejays and musicians”, noted Mr. PEACOCK.

From Bebe Cool to Chameleone and Juliana Kanyomozi, many artistes credit DJ Bush Baby for giving them a crucial East African platform.

During his time on air, especially on EATV, he ensured Uganda’s voice was heard in Nairobi, Dar es Salaam, Kigali, and beyond for years before YouTube or Spotify.

Bush Baby later returned to Uganda and worked  with Sanyu FM, XFM, and Urban TV, where he hosted musical shows and developed creative content.

At NEXT Radio and Urban TV, he rose to become head of the creative department at Next Media Services.

In 2024, DJ Bush Baby joined XRadio in Dar es Salaam and continued  to broadcast his  weekly Thursday show from Kampala, bridging audiences across the region with his encyclopedic knowledge of African sound and showbiz history.

 

Bush Baby was rarely in the business of chasing awards, his influence earned him several recognitions across the region, including lifetime achievement honours from deejaying associations and music platforms.

 

In his final years, the veteran Deejay focused more on media training and consultancies while remaining active in radio and proving that his relevance transcended decades.

 

 

Bush Baby leaves behind not just fans, but a media fraternity that owes much of its evolution to his pioneering spirit.

Ugandans will forever remember him as an inspiring deejay, a broadcaster, a talent developer, and most of all, a cultural architect who connected East Africa through sound.

Bush Baby was officially married to one Sandra Drajo also former employee of Air Uganda and the couple was blessed with one child.

The former Urban TV boss married his longtime fiancée Sandra Drajo on THE 3rd January 2015 at a colorful ceremony at the All Saints Church, Nakasero

Michael Benjamin Owor, widely known to fans and colleagues as DJ Bush Baby, will be laid to rest this Sunday in his ancestral home of Tororo.
