MIDRAND, South Africa – A storm is brewing over the candidacy of Algerian politician Fateh Boutbig for the Presidency of the Pan-African Parliament (PAP).

In a viral video, Boutbig claimed that Algeria has become a “quasi-European country,” sparking outrage among those who believe the head of Africa’s legislative body should be unapologetically African.

Boutbig’s comments, where he frames European standards as the ultimate goal for Algeria, have been met with derision across the continent.

Critics argue that at a time when Africa is asserting its sovereignty and seeking “African solutions to African problems,” Boutbig’s rhetoric feels like a throwback to a colonial mindset.

While Algerian Minister of Trade Kamel Rezig focuses on economic exports, Boutbig’s political messaging seems to distance the nation from its continental brothers.

Can a man who views his own country as “almost European” truly understand the struggles, aspirations, and identity of the 1.4 billion people he seeks to represent?
