1,000 Members, 100 Shares Each: A Six-Month Campaign to Rebuild Our Cooperative Financial Institution

By Don Edwarles MKM | Gateway News

KISUBI, WAKISO DISTRICT, UGANDA — A renewed call has been made to all stakeholders of Munaku Kaama Kisubi Savings and Credit Cooperative Society Limited (MKK SACCO) to unite and provide financial support towards revamping the SACCO, strengthening its capital base, restoring stakeholder confidence, and positioning the institution for sustainable growth.

The proposed initiative calls upon current members, former members, prospective members, community leaders, professionals, businesspeople, friends of Kisubi, development partners, and other well-wishers to support a structured six-month share mobilisation campaign aimed at rebuilding the cooperative institution.

The campaign proposes that at least 1,000 members each purchase a minimum of 100 shares over six months, at a rate of 20 shares per month.

This initiative is intended to demonstrate the power of collective action: when many people make manageable contributions towards a shared objective, they can create a meaningful financial foundation for institutional recovery and development.

The message to all stakeholders is clear: the future of MKK SACCO requires shared commitment, responsible leadership, financial discipline, and a common determination to rebuild.

A Collective Vision for Reviving MKK SACCO

Munaku Kaama Kisubi SACCO has a history associated with the Kisubi community and Uganda’s cooperative movement. Its institutional history indicates that it was established in 2008, although its current membership, financial position, registration particulars, and operational status should be verified by the SACCO’s leadership.

Like other cooperative financial institutions, MKK SACCO has the potential to promote a savings culture, facilitate access to responsible credit, support entrepreneurship, and empower members to improve their economic wellbeing.

A strong SACCO can help individuals pool their resources, finance productive activities, build financial resilience, and pursue economic opportunities that may be difficult to achieve independently.

However, sustainable revival requires more than goodwill. It demands adequate capital, sound governance, professional management, effective financial controls, responsible lending, digital transformation, and the active participation of members.

The proposed six-month campaign therefore offers stakeholders an opportunity to contribute to a wider institutional revival agenda.

The goal is not merely to raise money; it is to rebuild a stronger, more accountable, and more sustainable MKK SACCO.

The 1,000-Member, 100-Share Initiative

The proposed campaign is built around a simple and measurable target.

Campaign component| Proposed target
Participating members| At least 1,000
Minimum shares per member| 100
Monthly share purchases per member| 20 shares
Campaign duration| Six months
Total shares targeted| 100,000 shares
Primary objective| Strengthen member-owned capital and support institutional revival

Under this proposal, each participating member would purchase 20 shares every month for five months to reach 100 shares, with the overall campaign continuing for six months to allow mobilisation, follow-up, verification, and completion of outstanding purchases.

Alternatively, if the SACCO wishes to distribute the 100-share target evenly across all six months, it could adopt an approved schedule of approximately 16 or 17 shares per month, with the final monthly amount adjusted to reach exactly 100 shares.

For clarity, the recommended campaign structure is 20 shares per month for five months, followed by a sixth month for final mobilisation, verification, and reporting. This preserves the stated target of 100 shares per member while keeping the overall campaign period at six months.

The Board of Directors should formally approve the share-purchase schedule and communicate it clearly to all participants before the campaign begins.

What Could the Campaign Raise?

The total amount mobilised will depend on the officially approved price of each share.

For illustration, if one share costs UGX 10,000, the campaign would produce the following results:

Description| Calculation| Illustrative amount
Cost of 20 shares per month| 20 × UGX 10,000| UGX 200,000
Cost of 100 shares per member| 100 × UGX 10,000| UGX 1,000,000
Total shares purchased by 1,000 members| 1,000 × 100| 100,000 shares
Total share capital targeted| 100,000 × UGX 10,000| UGX 1 billion

Under this illustration, each member would purchase UGX 200,000 worth of shares per month during the five-month purchasing phase, reaching a total contribution of UGX 1 million per member.

Collectively, 1,000 participating members would mobilise UGX 1 billion in share purchases.

These figures are illustrative and do not represent a confirmed share price or an approved financial target for MKK SACCO. The official share price, membership eligibility, payment procedures, and applicable shareholding rules must be verified before the campaign is launched.

If the approved share price is different, the financial target should be recalculated accordingly.

The initiative must also distinguish share capital from ordinary savings deposits, loan repayments, donations, and other financial resources, since each serves a different purpose and must be accounted for appropriately.

Why Every Stakeholder Should Participate

1. Current Members: Take the Lead

Current members are encouraged to review the proposed initiative and consider participating according to their financial capacity and the SACCO’s approved rules.

Purchasing additional shares, where permitted, can strengthen member ownership and contribute to the cooperative’s capital base.

Members should also participate in general meetings, demand transparent financial reporting, support responsible leadership, and monitor the institution’s progress.

A cooperative is strongest when its members actively participate in both its development and its accountability.

2. Former Members: Consider Re-engagement

Former members and previous supporters of MKK SACCO are encouraged to review the revival proposal and consider reconnecting with the institution where eligible.

Their experience, professional networks, and knowledge of the SACCO’s history may contribute to rebuilding confidence and encouraging wider participation.

Re-engagement should be voluntary and informed by a clear explanation of the SACCO’s current financial condition, governance arrangements, and future plans.

3. The Kisubi Community: Support a Shared Institution

The people of Kisubi and surrounding communities are encouraged to learn about the campaign and share accurate information with eligible prospective members.

Community networks can help the SACCO reach more people, promote financial literacy, and encourage productive saving and investment.

The initiative should be based on voluntary participation, informed decision-making, and confidence in the SACCO’s management.

4. Businesspeople and Professionals: Invest in Cooperative Development

Entrepreneurs, traders, farmers, salaried workers, and professionals can contribute through eligible membership and share purchases.

Accountants, financial managers, lawyers, ICT specialists, auditors, business advisers, and other professionals may also provide technical assistance under appropriate arrangements.

Their expertise could help MKK SACCO improve its financial systems, customer services, risk management, and operational efficiency.

5. Development Partners: Support Institutional Capacity

The SACCO’s leadership should explore partnerships with suitable cooperative development organisations, financial-sector capacity-building institutions, technology providers, and other eligible partners.

Support could take the form of training, digital systems, financial literacy, enterprise development, governance improvement, cybersecurity, and technical assistance.

Such partnerships should complement the members’ capital contributions and must not be presented as secured funding until formally confirmed.

Six Months of Organised Action

For the proposed campaign to succeed, MKK SACCO should adopt a clear implementation and accountability framework.

Month One: Consultation and Preparation

The Board and management should verify the SACCO’s current financial position, legal and regulatory status, membership records, share price, capital needs, assets, liabilities, and operational priorities.

Stakeholders should be consulted, and the campaign’s terms should be formally approved and communicated.

Month Two: Launch and Member Mobilisation

The SACCO should launch a public awareness campaign using meetings, member communication channels, digital platforms, and community networks.

Eligible members should receive clear information about the cost of shares, payment schedules, membership requirements, and the intended purpose of the campaign.

Month Three: First Progress Review

The SACCO should assess the number of participants, shares purchased, and funds received.

Members should receive an appropriate progress update showing whether the campaign is on track to achieve its target.

Month Four: Expand Participation

The mobilisation team should encourage more eligible members to participate and support existing participants in following the approved payment schedule.

Management should simultaneously demonstrate progress in improving governance, financial controls, and member services.

Month Five: Complete the Main Share-Purchase Target

Participating members should be encouraged to complete their 100-share commitments, subject to the approved campaign rules.

The SACCO should reconcile payments against official share registers and accounting records.

Month Six: Verification and Public Accountability

The final month should be used to reconcile share purchases, verify the amount of capital received, assess progress against the target of 1,000 members and 100,000 shares, and prepare a comprehensive accountability report.

The report should state the number of participating members, total shares purchased, actual funds received, mobilisation costs, and outstanding institutional priorities.

An appropriate independent verification or audit should be undertaken in line with applicable requirements and the SACCO’s governance framework.

Building on the Proposed 2027–2031 Strategic Development Plan

The share mobilisation campaign should form part of the wider proposed MKK SACCO Five-Year Strategic Development Plan, 2027–2031, subject to formal consultation, verification of baseline information, and approval by the relevant SACCO organs.

The strategic framework identifies ten priority areas for institutional development:

1. Governance, leadership, and accountability.
2. Financial sustainability and capital development.
3. Digital transformation and secure financial systems.
4. Savings mobilisation and responsible credit management.
5. Human resource development and professional capacity.
6. Member services and financial literacy.
7. Branch modernisation and sustainable geographical outreach.
8. Entrepreneurship and community economic development.
9. Risk management, regulatory compliance, and institutional resilience.
10. Partnerships and resource mobilisation.

The proposed strategic plan also contains an indicative five-year development budget of UGX 8.5 billion. This is a provisional planning estimate rather than an approved budget or confirmed source of funding.

The budget must be validated against audited accounts, implementation priorities, actual institutional needs, realistic revenue projections, and credible financing arrangements.

The proposed share mobilisation campaign would be one element of the broader strategy, not a substitute for comprehensive institutional reform.

Transparency and Accountability Must Guide the Campaign

Stakeholder confidence is fundamental to the success of any financial institution.

Before accepting share-purchase commitments, MKK SACCO should communicate its financial position, governance arrangements, legal status, current obligations, and intended use of the capital to be mobilised.

Members should be informed about their rights and responsibilities as shareholders, including the applicable rules governing share ownership and any restrictions on transferring or withdrawing capital.

All payments should be made through officially approved channels and recorded in the SACCO’s accounting and share-register systems.

Members should receive receipts and be able to verify their shareholdings. Regular progress reports should be made available, while personal and financial information is protected.

The SACCO should also maintain appropriate internal controls, independent oversight, transparent procurement, and effective complaint-handling procedures.

The campaign must not promise guaranteed financial returns or suggest that share purchases are risk-free.

The stronger the accountability, the greater the opportunity to rebuild lasting confidence among members and stakeholders.

A Call to the SACCO Leadership

The Board of Directors and management are encouraged to take ownership of this initiative by developing a detailed campaign plan, establishing measurable milestones, and appointing an accountable implementation team.

The leadership should provide a clear explanation of the SACCO’s challenges and present a credible recovery programme showing how new capital will contribute to institutional sustainability.

It should also ensure that the campaign complies with the SACCO’s governing documents, applicable cooperative and financial-sector requirements, and any necessary regulatory approvals.

Fundraising should go hand in hand with improvements in financial management, responsible lending, operational efficiency, digital systems, and member services.

The objective must be to ensure that any capital mobilised is protected and used responsibly in pursuit of the SACCO’s approved objectives.

The Message to All MKK SACCO Stakeholders

The proposed campaign offers stakeholders a practical way to demonstrate their commitment to the future of Munaku Kaama Kisubi SACCO.

The target is clear:

AT LEAST 1,000 MEMBERS.
100 SHARES PER MEMBER.
20 SHARES PER MONTH FOR FIVE MONTHS.
SIX MONTHS FOR THE COMPLETE MOBILISATION AND ACCOUNTABILITY CAMPAIGN.

At an illustrative price of UGX 10,000 per share, the initiative could mobilise UGX 1 billion in share purchases from 1,000 participating members.

The actual financial target must be based on the SACCO’s officially approved share price.

Every stakeholder is encouraged to study the proposal, ask questions, examine the revival strategy, and participate voluntarily according to their financial capacity.

The initiative should not place undue financial pressure on any individual. Its strength lies in collective commitment, transparent administration, and a shared understanding of the benefits and responsibilities of cooperative ownership.

Conclusion: A Stronger MKK SACCO Begins with Collective Commitment

The future of Munaku Kaama Kisubi SACCO depends on the willingness of its stakeholders to work together towards a common goal.

A six-month campaign involving at least 1,000 members purchasing 100 shares each could provide an important starting point for strengthening member-owned capital and supporting a wider institutional revival.

However, lasting success will require more than financial contributions. It will demand responsible leadership, sound governance, effective financial controls, reliable systems, professional management, and continuous engagement with members.

The call to action is therefore directed to every eligible member, former member, prospective member, businessperson, professional, community leader, and development partner who believes in the potential of cooperative financial institutions.

Let us support a revival programme built on transparency, accountability, and practical action.

Let us make cooperative ownership meaningful by combining financial commitment with active participation and responsible oversight.

Together, we can lay the foundation for a revitalised, trusted, and sustainable Munaku Kaama Kisubi SACCO.

The proposed campaign is a call for stakeholder consultation and support. Its official launch, share price, payment schedule, and financial targets should be approved and verified by the SACCO’s authorised leadership.
