And since its establishment in 1936, UVRI has evolved into one of Africa’s leading biomedical research institutions, says Prof Pontiano Kaleebu also Director Uganda Virus Research Institute.
Rapid advances in artificial intelligence and genomics and changing research funding landscapes call for innovative solutions, stronger partnerships and sustained investment in science and research capacity,says Prof Kaleebu report.
Our scientist have made significant contributions to the understanding and control of infectious diseases, including yellow fever,viral haemorrhagic fevers,influenza,tuberculosis,HIV/AIDS,malaria,and other emerging and re-emerging infections,while also advancing research on non communicable diseases and other public health priorities,he noted.
These achievements have been possible through the dedication of generations of scientists,clinicians,support staff,research participants,communities, and partners who commitment to scientific excellence has established UVRI as a trusted centre of research and innovation with global recognition.
Our work has informed national and global health policies, strengthened disease surveillance, advanced clinical car and contributed to improved health and well-being for millions of people, reads director’s report.

Meanwhile the Uganda Virus Research Institute will be officially launching it’s new polio regional laboratory, this Wednesday and the president of the republic of Uganda, H.E Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is expected to be the chief guest.
Several key speakers have been lined up to make presentations during the UVRI 90yrs celebrations and these include Prof Alison Elliot,Prof Charles Olaro,Dr Julius Julian Lutwama,Dr Sheila Nina Balinda,Prof Moffat Nyirenda plus others.
