Uganda Cancer Institute hosts delegation from Kenya’s Ministry of Health

The Uganda Cancer Institute (UCI) was honored to host a high-level delegation from the Ministry of Health, Republic of Kenya, led by the Director General of Health Services.

The visit is part of a strategic initiative to explore areas of mutual collaboration in research, training, and care across the East African region.

The visiting delegation held extensive discussions with UCI leadership and key departmental heads on strengthening bilateral cooperation in oncology research, data sharing, cancer surveillance, clinical trials, and workforce development.

Both institutions reaffirmed their commitment to addressing the rising burden of non- communicable diseases (cancer) in the region through evidence-based and collaborative approaches.

Speaking during the engagement, the Executive Director of the Uganda Cancer Institute, Dr. Jackson Orem, emphasized the importance of regional partnerships in enhancing cancer research capacity, promoting innovation, and improving patient outcomes. He noted that shared experiences and expertise between Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania present a unique opportunity to accelerate cancer control efforts.

The Director General of Health Services, Kenya, Dr. Patrick Amoth, commended UCI for its leadership in cancer care and research, and expressed keen interest in formalizing collaborative frameworks that will benefit both countries.

The visit included a tour of UCI’s clinical and research facilities, including the Clinical Trials Unit, Radiotherapy Department, and the East Africa Oncology Center of excellence.

The delegation was particularly interested in UCI’s model for integrated cancer research and care, and its ongoing partnerships with regional and international institutions.

This engagement marks a significant step toward fostering cross-border collaboration in research and underscores the shared regional vision to reduce the cancer burden through joint action, innovation, and solidarity.
