The sudden story of the death of the former Busiro South Member of Parliament Charles Matovu has plugged the National Unity Platform (NUP) into mourning & raising questions over circumstances that claimed his life.

The 41yrs old, Charles Matovu died on  Thursday, October 22, at the  Mulago National Referral Hospital after developing what his family and party members described as an abrupt health complication.

Political tempers rose after queries about  Matovu’s death & who targeted him during the tougher times including his court battles against the current Busiro South Mp Opio Kenan

The most pressing question remains unanswered & what exactly caused his sudden death?

Matovu was  trying to reclaim his “stolen victory”  in the  courts of law  and later passed on before the final hearing of his court battle, that was scheduled later this coming month.

In a notice dated October 28, 2026, the Assistant Registrar of the High Court at Entebbe, Rashida Butanula, formally announced that the petition had abated following Matovu’s death.

The notice was issued under Section 86 of the Parliamentary Elections Act and Rule 20 of the Parliamentary Elections (Interim Provisions) Election Petitions Rules.

Matovu, a former Busiro South MP, had challenged the outcome of the 2026 parliamentary election, in which Opio was declared the winner.

His death brought the legal challenge to an end because he was the sole petitioner in the case.

The court’s notice, issued six days after Matovu’s death, formally confirmed the closure of the election petition, which was still pending at the time of his death.

Meanwhile, Matovu was born on the 1st April 1985 &  won the Busiro South in 2021 &  in January 2026 lost the parliamentary seat with 30,487 votes against with 36,497   to NRM party’s Kenan Opio.

Matovu challenged the results  at the High Court in Entebbe with  irregularities & claimed that the Electoral Commission & the army helped Opio win.

Opio’s lawyers, led by Andrew Kilyowa, contested the petition & none of the allegations had been tested in a final judgment  before Hon. Charles Matovu died.
