WAKE UP CALL: Women Push For Esports Development In The East African Region During Kampala Festival

The Swahili Esports Champions tournament over the weekend attracted hundreds of gamers from different parts of the continent to a thrilling  festival and competition in Kampala Uganda.

One of the most inspiring highlights included a panel discussion of influential women and promoters of the Esports ecosystem.

These women discussed opportunities, challenges, and pathway for women to be champions of gaming plus the shaping of the future of Esports in Africa.

On the discussion panel included Kenechukwu Okeke, Magdaline Njeri,Maria Laure Noridor, Faith Ahurira and Naicha Khalid  ahead of the International women’s day celebrations.

At a time when the African Esports scene is experiencing rapid growth, this panel places a well-deserved spotlight on the women who are helping to drive the progress.

Faith Dorothy Ahurira also founder of Gamer Girls Uganda, thru her organization has been instrumental in creating safe spaces for women to learn and compete and grow within gaming.

Marie Laure Noridor, also internationally recognized content creator and founder of Kayane TV added her global experience in Esports and highlighted how African talent can connect within the global gaming ecosystem.

As a competitive player in one of the world iconic fighting game, Magdaline Njeri represents the growing number of African women stepping into Esports.

Also invited for the Swahili Esports championship included newly voted Kampala capital city lord Mayor, Ronald Balimwezo Nsubuga, former Busiro Mp Joseph Mutebi Balikuddembe, Bonny Omara also general secretary Uganda Esports &Gaming Federations.

Marvin Abraham also Esports official revealed during the summit, how  Esports improved his life from passion to profession by carrying the Ugandan flag in Morocco during his first tournament.

In Uganda, 68% of gamers are aged 27yrs averagely & 95%  of them play games on mobile phones, making it affordable for every one,added Marvin Abraham.

This year’s Esports summit in Kampala was supported by several different organizations including the  French embassy, Sages,Gamer Girls Uganda ,Creation Africa Ghana plus others.(By PEACOCK KAWEESA & Agencies)
