3rd July 2025 marked the start of the official preparations for the 2026 Commonwealth Games for Uganda after welcoming the King’s Baton.
The King’s Button is the ideal symbol that announces the closure of the Commonwealth Games in the member countries of the games.
Uganda received the King’s Button at the Uganda Olympics committee with Boxer Khasim Mulungi, and Runner Godfrey Chan Wengo were charged to deliver the Button.

The launch was graced by Her Excellency Tiffany Kirlew, the Deputy High Commissioner of Uganda, as the chief guest. I congratulate Uganda for launching the King’s Button relay for the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
Uganda is one of the 56 members of the games, which aim to promote friendship and democracy among our member nations, as well as British unity,’ said Kirlew.
The Chief Guest at the event had International Olympics Committee members William Blick, 2nd Vice President of the Uganda Olympics Committee Moses Mwase, and Assistant Secretary General Sarah Chellangat alongside.
At the event, Blick noticed. We are proud to launch the King’s Button Relay. This is the symbol confirming that the Commonwealth Games are around the corner; it is going to be moved across Uganda as it is done in other countries.
On the extension, Mwasa alerted different sports bodies to gear up preparations for the game by preparing athletes.’
With the Kings Button relay launched, it is a serious call for federations to gear up the preparation of athletes for the games; in the last three to four editions, we have been significant, we need to keep improving.’
Following the presentation of the button, Khasim Mulungi revealed his excitement and promised to raise the Ugandan flag higher. I am really happy for choosing me to present the button. If I qualify for the game, my focus is to win a medal as I did at the Africa games, Insha Allah.
Long sprinter Chan Wengo also mentioned, picking me to present the button has raised my confidence.
I am going to continue working hard so that I can continue rising and inspire more fellow athletes.
The 2026 Commonwealth Games were confirmed to be hosted by Glasgow, Scotland, which hosted the games in 2014.
At the Commonwealth Games, Uganda has won 58 medals, including 19 golds, 16 silvers, and 23 bronzes, with Athletics and Boxing winning the most medals.
