Uganda Decides 2026: Major General (Rtd) Mugisha Muntu successfully nominated for presidency

Major General (Rtd) Gregory Mugisha Muntuyera, from the Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) was successfully nominated as a presidential candidate on Wednesday, 24th September 2025 at the new EC Grounds in Lweza – Lubowa along Entebbe Road.

The 66-year-old former Military official, a General in ranking became the fifth person to be nominated.

“Peace is the presence of justice” Muntu called out in his address to the media moments after nominations.

He castigated the prolonged stay in power by the current president Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the rampant corruption, high unemployment rate among other vices that affect the ordinary Ugandans.

Mugisha Muntu arrives at EC Grounds

Clad in the ANT purple colours, Muntu and his entourage arrived at the EC Lubowa Grounds at around 1 PM.

Former leader of opposition in Parliament Winnie Kiiza was among the members who accompanied General Muntu.

Muntu followed Forum For Democratic Change (FDC) candidate James Nathan Nandala Mafabi, 59 who was also nominated on Wednesday.

Three candidates were nominated on Tuesday, 23rd September 2025.

These included the incumbent Yoweri Museveni Kaguta Tibuhaburwa of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), Elton Joseph Mabirizi (Conservative Party) and Robert Kasibante (National Peasants Party).

According to the Electoral Commission chairman Justice Simon Byabakama, the documentations of more candidates were being assessed.

Official campaigns start on the 29th September 2025 and will run until 6th January 2026 across the country.
