By close of business for the opening day of nomination activity for presidential candidates leading to the 2026 elections, three candidates had been successfully nominated at the new EC Grounds in Lubowa, along Entebbe Road on Tuesday, 23rd September 2025.

The incumbent Yoweri Museveni Kaguta Tibuhaburwa of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) was joined by two others; Elton Joseph Mabirizi (Conservative Party) and Robert Kasibante (National Peasants Party).

Justice Simon Mugenyi Byabakama announced the candidature of the three persons, handing them a certificate each, a soft copy of the national voters’ registry each and the security detail with their cars.

“The expectations have been met for the opening day after the thorough preparations we have had. We successfully nominated three candidates and we expect more tomorrow” Justice Byabakama stated.

First to be nominated at 10 am was president Museveni who was accompanied by the First Lady, Hon. Janet Museveni.

“I want to further improve our GDP in the coming Kisanja (term of office). We have done well with electricity, safe water, roads and education which we have to transform to be free for all” Museveni who later addressed a rally at Kololo ceremonial independence grounds remarked.

Mabirizi of the Conservative Party was turned away for unclear documentation but returned later in the evening to be cleared.

“It is time Uganda becomes the food basket of Africa. We have the ability to make since we have the good weather and soils” Mabirizi who was accompanied by the CP chairman John Kenny Lukyamuzi vowed.

He strongly castigated the ideology of having General Muhoozi as the next president of Uganda after president Museveni.

In his address to the media, Kasibante of the National Peasants’ Party hinted of transformative development for the country.

“This campaign is not built on promises but on purpose. This is a movement and revolution through the ballot box. We must end the corruption and restore dignity. We need agricultural modernization” Kasibante hinted.

Justice Byabakama told reporters after the first day that more candidates will be nominated on the second day; to include Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu of National Unity Platform (NUP) and Nandala Mafabi (Forum For Democratic Change); and any other if they pass the mandatory set conditions.
