The Uganda Athletics held the first major century celebration with John Akii Bua memorial meet where some Uganda talented runners got beaten while Halima Nakaayi and Shida Leni winning their races.
The colourful event was centered on Akii Bua Memorial meet that involved runners from Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia, Eritrea and other countries.
The most anticipated race was 400 meters hurdles the race of late Akii Bua while he ran while winning the first Olympics games gold medal at Munich 1972 in Germany where recorded a time 47.82 which is still the national record.
On Akii Bua’s 23rd Memorial, Kennedy Onen of Uganda Prisons also from Lira the area where Akii Bua was raised won the race but far from the late’s record.
Onen ran 54.96 beating Brian Onencan of UPDF who posted 55.74 and Felix Ouma Ongee of Uganda Prisons who finished third.
In other race which Akii Bua used to run was 400 meters, in that race Kenyan Zablon Ekhal Ekwan won after beating Uganda’s current best Harold Adoli.
Ekwan ran 55.97 again getting late to Akii Bua’s best time of 55.82 he recorded in 1976, Adoli who came to chess the record finished at 46.33 while Kenneth Omuka was third with 47:55.
In Women’s races, Halima Nakaayi won the 800 meters at the time of 1:59.68 to beat Sarah Moraa Orombi of Kenya by 26 micro seconds while Saida Tsehaye Ageze of Ethiopia finished third.
Another female Ugandan Shida Leni of Uganda Police was a commanding figure of her race the 400 meters after beating Kenyan Lanolin Aoko by recording 51.62.
The other Uganda Athletes that won their races was Tom Dodriga in 800 meters men, Silas Chemutai in 1500 meters men and Harbert Kibet in 5000 men.
The other female was Bridget Mbwali in 100 meters, Scalet Chemutai in 1500 and Charity Cherop in 5000 meters.
In field events, Charles Okello won the long jump by marking 7.39 beating South Sudanese Ayup Khaak Khar Liay’s 7.15 while Uganda Prisons teammate Martin Odongo won shot put throwing after marking 12.98.
In women’s fielding, Uganda Police’s Josephine Joyce Lalam won the Javelin throwing at a mark of 49.07, UCU’s Kevin Prisca marked 35.85 to win Discuss throw while Gulu university’s Sharon Amororwat won the long jump at 5.72 mark.
