Kampala, Uganda
Stewards officiating the CHAN 2024 tournament have threatened to boycott the next match at Namboole Stadium unless their outstanding allowances and welfare needs are addressed.
The stewards, who came from upcountry to officiate the Uganda vs Algeria match, claim they were mistreated and denied basic necessities like water and meals.
Despite the government’s allocation of funds to the Local Organizing Committee (LOC), the stewards have not received their allowances.
“We are not being treated fairly,” said one steward. “We traveled from far distances, spent the night out without accommodation, and were not provided with meals or water during the match. This is unacceptable.” he pleaded.

The stewards have given the LOC an ultimatum to confirm payment of their allowances before they agree to officiate the next match. Failure to comply may result in a boycott, which could disrupt the tournament’s proceedings.
The stewards’ predicament raises concerns about the LOC’s management of funds and prioritization of stakeholders’ welfare.
The tournament’s success relies heavily on the impartiality and professionalism of match officials, who deserve fair treatment and compensation for their services.
