The St. Egyito Yere Yere Collaborative Forest Management (CFM) Group in Mt. Kei Central Forest Reserve (CFR) has received a consignment of assorted beekeeping equipment, through support from a World Bank-funded project.

The equipment, which includes modern beehives, protective gear, honey extractors, and harvesting tools, aims to enhance sustainable livelihoods while promoting forest conservation.

This support is part of broader efforts to empower forest-adjacent communities to engage in environmentally friendly income-generating activities.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, James Okot Makamoi the National Forestry Authority (NFA) representative emphasized the importance of integrating community development with forest protection.

“Beekeeping is not only a source of income but also a powerful incentive for communities to conserve forest ecosystems,” said James.

Members of the CFM group expressed gratitude for the support, noting that it would significantly improve their honey production and household incomes.

The initiative is expected to reduce pressure on forest resources while fostering community stewardship of Mt. Kei CFR.
