SQUASH WEEK: BOU Remembers Prof Emmanuel Tumusiime Mutebile With Burning Legacy

It’s now 3yrs down the road since the former Ugandan Banker and Economist, Prof Emmanuel Tumusiime Mutebile passed on (27 January 1949 – 23 January 2022).

The former Bank of Uganda Governor, Prof Emmanuel Tumusiime Mutebile died on a Sunday morning at the Nairobi Hospital in  Kenya at the age of 72yrs.

Tumusiime Mutebile attended Kigezi College Butobere for his O-Level studies from S1-S4) before joining Makerere College School in Kampala for his A-Level studies from  S5-S6.

In 1970, he entered Makerere University, where he was elected president of the university Students’ Guild.

In 1979 and 1984, Tumusiime Mutebile was appointed to several government positions in Uganda ranging from deputy principal secretary to the president at State House in 1979, to undersecretary in the ministry of planning in 1981 where he rose to senior economist and then chief economist in 1984.

Mutebile was in January 2021 re-appointed as the governor of Bank of Uganda for a fifth five-year term.

World over, central bank governors are important and crucial to the extent that they affect stock markets, economies and the local politics.

As we mark the 3rd edition of this memorial squash  tournament, we are committed to honoring Prof. Mutebile’s legacy in a way that reflects the values he stood for to excellence, disciple, humility, and service to the country.

Kampala club will host the 3rd edition of the Prof Emmanuel Tumusiime Mutebile squash tournament starting next week from the  13th -18th April 2026, bringing together Squash players in memory of the brilliant economist.

The event will climax with a prizing giving ceremony on Friday 18th April at the Kampala club and the Bank of Uganda Governor, Dr Micheal Atingi-Ego will be the Chief Guest of Honour.

Bank of Uganda has injected twenty million shillings into this year’s Prof. Mutebile’s Squash tournament and every participate is a winner with lots trophies to be gave away at the grand finale.

Prof Mutebile memorial tournament is steadily becoming a key fixture on Uganda Squash calendar, attracting both competitive players and supporters of the sport while serving the dignified platform for remembrance, revealed Kaliisa Katongole also deputy director Bank of Uganda during press conference on Thursday at the Kampala Club.
