Police in Kampala have launched a sweeping crackdown targeting robberies, phone snatching, and drug abuse, in response to a rise in crime and public concern over insecurity in the city.

The operations, conducted on March 23, were coordinated across several divisions under the Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP), marking what authorities describe as the beginning of sustained enforcement efforts.

According to KMP spokesperson Rachael Kawala, the crackdown was triggered by a surge in public complaints regarding escalating criminal activity, social disorder, and growing insecurity in urban communities.

Police say the operations are aimed at dismantling criminal networks involved in street robberies and phone theft, as well as curbing drug-related activities that have been linked to increased violence and lawlessness.

Authorities added that the intensified enforcement will continue in the coming days, with more arrests expected as security agencies move to restore order and public confidence.

Police have urged the public to cooperate with law enforcement by providing information that could aid ongoing investigations and help identify suspects involved in criminal activities.

“This is just the beginning,” Kawala said, emphasizing the force’s commitment to ensuring safety across the capital.
