King’s College, Budo raised UGX 888.9 million from a grand fundraising dinner held at the school’s Main Hall, as part of an ambitious plan to construct a new students’ chapel to replace the existing one built in 1959.

The glamorous dinner, attended by old Budonians, clergy, parents, students, and well-wishers, marked a historic moment in the school’s spiritual journey, blending faith, legacy, and philanthropy.

The retired Bishop of Namirembe Diocese, Rt. Rev. Wilberforce Kityo Luwalira, who presided over the event, urged Budonians to uphold the school’s Christian heritage and contribute to projects that reinforce moral and spiritual formation.

“King’s College Budo was built on a foundation of faith and service. Let us continue building structures that remind our children of God’s grace and inspire them to serve humanity with integrity,” Bishop Luwalira said.

According to Canon John Fred Kazibwe, the Principal of King’s College Budo, the new chapel will accommodate up to 2,000 worshippers, addressing the space limitations of the current one which was constructed over six decades ago.

“The school population has grown exponentially since 1959. The existing chapel can no longer hold all our students during worship,” Canon Kazibwe noted. “This new structure will serve not only as a place of prayer but as a symbol of the enduring faith that defines Budo.”

He said the architectural design will reflect both tradition and modernity — maintaining the historic Budo identity while embracing contemporary worship needs.

By the end of the evening, the school had realized UGX 888,932,575, bringing it closer to its UGX 1 billion fundraising goal. Of this, UGX 705,932,575 was received in cash, while UGX 182,325,000 was pledged.

“We are deeply grateful to every Budonian who gave and prayed for this project,” Canon Kazibwe said. “This chapel will stand as a legacy of unity and devotion to God.”

The new chapel joins a growing list of developments at the iconic institution — including Grace House, Australia House, and modern classroom blocks — that have redefined Budo’s learning environment over the past four years.

School administrators believe that balancing academic excellence with spiritual formation is key to nurturing disciplined, compassionate, and visionary students.

“Budo is not just about academics — it’s about character,” Bishop Luwalira said. “The new chapel will remind every Budonian that true success begins with faith and humility.”

According to the organizing committee, construction will commence once architectural reviews and diocesan approvals are finalized.

The chapel is expected to feature state-of-the-art acoustics, energy-efficient lighting, and dedicated spaces for prayer, choir practice, and pastoral counseling.

The initiative has received overwhelming support from alumni groups across the world, with several chapters pledging continued fundraising until the project is completed.
