Kakaka Small hydro-power project (Western Uganda, Kasese district) located along river Rwimi at the foothills of Rwenzori ranges is running a hydro power plant of 4.72 MW.
Following water source protection guidelines, the project prepared a water source protection plan in December 2022, and therefore, the plan recommends stakeholders and community engagement through sensitization on Catchment based water resources management.

In the above regard, the project invited staffs from AWMZ (DWRM) to sensitize and voice the ministry s recommendation of Bamboo as a plant species suitable for riverbank stabilization.
Main objectives of the meeting:
1. To sensitize community on the best practices in the protected zone of River Rwimi.
2. To inform the stakeholders on policy recommendations on coverage of the protective zone of rivers according to schedule 6 of lakes, river, wetland environmental regulation 2000.
3. To sensitize the community on the importance of bamboo plants in riverbank stabilization and value addition as a source of income to the community members.

Outputs of the meeting:
1. Approximately 102 members in the development area attended and were sensitized in respect to the objective outline
2. Members requested additional indigenous tree seedlings to be distributed for planting
3.Members also interested themselves in grafting bamboo plants to produce seedlings for planting and income generation.
Recommendation:
- Planting of bamboo to start in the next one week
- Monitoring is to be done jointly during first quarter stakeholders’ engagement
- Community to be trained on bamboo grafting and planting
