On 28 September 2025, the world will mark International Safe Abortion Day (ISAD) under the theme “Safe Abortion is Life-saving Healthcare!”.
This is a bold reminder that access to safe abortion is not only a medical necessity but also a matter of human rights, dignity, and justice.
The Center for Reproductive Rights Africa uses the power of law to advance reproductive rights as fundamental human rights.
Across Africa, the litigation, policy advocacy, and partnerships are shaping laws, shifting norms, and expanding access to sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR).
Center for Reproductive Rights Africa therefore targets;
- Safeguarding access to safe abortion for survivors of sexual violence through the JMM case in Kenya.
- Breaking barriers to abortion access in Nigeria.
- Advancing access to abortion for survivors of sexual violence in Tanzania.
- Advocating for recognition of post abortion care as a constitutional right in Kenya’s Malindi Case.
- Challenging restrictive abortion provisions in Kenya through Petitions E008 of 2020 and 428 of 2018.
These landmark cases demonstrate what is possible when law, advocacy, and evidence converge.

It is also a reminder that millions of women and girls across Africa still face unsafe abortion, stigma, and restrictive legal barriers with devastating consequences for their health and lives.
These cases are among many that we are litigating across Africa as we continue to mobilize in solidarity for access to safe and legal abortion – a fundamental human right for all women and girls.
As the International Safe Abortion Day approaches, Center for Reproductive Rights Africa is committed to deepening public understanding and fostering informed dialogue on safe abortion as healthcare and a human right.
Together with partner organizations across the 7 countries on the continent, Center for Reproductive Rights Africa remains vibrant.
“Safe abortion is healthcare, and healthcare is a human right.”
