The East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) Ltd., together with its Tier One EITS contractor, officially launched a scholarship programme today to support 16 gifted but underprivileged students pursuing Telecommunications Engineering and Computer Science at Kyambogo University (10) and Makerere University (6), respectively.
The scholarships will enable the beneficiaries to complete their university studies. This programme is the second of its kind under the EACOP project in Uganda and reflects the continued commitment of EACOP and itscontractorstocreatinglastingimpactbeyondprojectimplementation.
The scholarship selection process was conducted transparently and rigorously, including interviews with shortlisted candidates from each institution.
Selection criteria included academic excellence, demonstrated financial need, genuine passion for the chosen field of study, and acommitment todrivingpositivechange.Sevenofthe16selectedcandidates are female, underscoring the programme’s contribution to advancing women’s participationinScience,Technology,EngineeringandMathematics(STEM)fields.
East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) Ltd. was established as a project company to develop, construct, and operate the pipeline system that will transport crude oil from KabaaleinUgandatothePortofTangainTanzania.AkeyfocusofEACOPistoenhance NationalContentbysourcinglocalgoodsandservices,whilepromotingskillsdevelopment and knowledge transfer. In support of this objective, EACOP and its contractors have enteredintoMemorandaofUnderstanding(MoUs)withseveralprofessionalbodiesand institutions,includingUgandaPetroleumInstitute,Kigumba(UPIK),MakerereUniversity, KyambogoUniversity,NakawaTechnicalVocationalCollege,andtheInstituteofSurveyors of Uganda. Further efforts are underway to engage additional strategic institutions in preparationfortheOperationsPhaseoftheproject.
Throughitscapacity-buildinginitiatives,EACOPanditscontractorshavewelcomed127 interns and graduate trainees, demonstrating their commitmentto developing youngtalent. In addition, through the Train-the-Trainer initiative, 808 hours of training have been delivered tolecturers,technicians,andprofessorsfromtertiaryinstitutions.
