The Catholic faithful of Kisubi and surrounding communities gathered in large numbers on Saturday, 15 August 2026, to celebrate the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, one of the most significant Marian feasts in the Catholic Church.
The celebrations were held at Our Lady Queen of Virgins Church, Kisubi Catholic Parish, located in Kisubi Mission, Kisubi Ward, Katabi Town Council along the Entebbe Road in Uganda.
More than 1,000 faithful reportedly attended the celebration, creating a deeply spiritual and festive atmosphere as Catholics came together to honour the Blessed Virgin Mary and reflect on her unique role in the history of salvation.
Celebration Led by Rev. Fr. Charles Sengendo
The celebration was led by Rev. Fr. Charles Sengendo, Parish Priest of Kisubi Catholic Church and Spiritual Director of the Region of Mary in Uganda.
In his pastoral leadership, Fr. Sengendo guided the faithful in reflecting on the significance of Mary’s Assumption and the Christian call to imitate her virtues of faith, humility, obedience, service and complete trust in God.
The celebration brought together members of the parish community, Marian devotees, families, youth, religious groups and other Catholic faithful who participated in the day’s religious activities.
The Solemnity of the Assumption celebrates the Catholic belief that the Blessed Virgin Mary was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory at the end of her earthly life.
For Catholics, the feast is not only about honouring Mary but also about celebrating the Christian hope of eternal life and the ultimate victory of Christ over sin and death.
At Kisubi, the occasion provided an opportunity for the faithful to renew their commitment to the Catholic faith while seeking Mary’s intercession and maternal guidance.
The turnout of more than 1,000 people demonstrated the strong devotion to Mary within the Kisubi Catholic community.
The faithful participated in prayers, worship and other activities associated with the solemn celebration, with the church grounds and surrounding areas filled with Catholics marking the important feast.
The celebration also highlighted the continuing importance of Marian devotion in the spiritual life of Catholics in Uganda.
The presence and leadership of Fr. Charles Sengendo, who also serves as Spiritual Director of the Region of Mary in Uganda, added particular significance to the celebration.
The Region of Mary and other Marian apostolic movements continue to encourage Catholics to deepen their relationship with Christ through prayer, evangelisation, service and devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary.
The Assumption feast therefore became an occasion not only for celebration but also for spiritual renewal and strengthening the bonds of the Catholic community.
The large gathering at Kisubi also reflected the role of the Catholic Church in bringing communities together around faith, prayer and service.
As Uganda’s Catholic faithful joined millions of Catholics across the world in celebrating the Assumption, the Kisubi celebration served as a reminder of the enduring place of Marian spirituality in the Catholic Church.
For the faithful who gathered at Our Lady Queen of Virgins Church, the day was ultimately a celebration of Mary, the Mother of Christ, and a testimony of hope in the promise of eternal life.
The 2026 Feast of the Assumption at Our Lady Queen of Virgins Church Kisubi will remain a significant moment for the parish community, particularly because of the impressive turnout and the spiritual leadership provided by Rev. Fr. Charles Sengendo.
