Just hours before Uruguay’s decisive FIFA World Cup clash against Spain, reports from Uruguayan outlet El Espectador Deportes claim that a serious confrontation has erupted between head coach Marcelo Bielsa and several senior players.

According to the report, a group of experienced internationals—including Federico Valverde, Sergio Rochet, Manuel Ugarte, and Rodrigo Bentancur—requested a private meeting with Bielsa to discuss growing concerns within the squad.
The players reportedly expressed their dissatisfaction with Bielsa’s demanding training methods, questioned the intensity of preparations, and urged the coach to adopt a more defensive, low-block approach against Spain rather than engaging in an open tactical battle.
However, the meeting is said to have quickly escalated.
Bielsa allegedly accused the senior players of attempting to undermine his authority, referencing previous controversies involving Luis Suárez and Nahitan Nández.
The veteran tactician reportedly insisted that his methods had elevated the careers of players such as Sebastián Cáceres and Maximiliano Araújo, while maintaining that Uruguay should mirror Spain’s tactical approach instead of sitting deep.
If the reports are accurate, the disagreement has left the relationship between Bielsa and parts of the squad severely strained, casting doubt over the atmosphere in the Uruguayan camp ahead of one of their most important matches of the tournament.
Neither the Uruguay Football Association nor Marcelo Bielsa has publicly commented on the reported incident.
As anticipation builds for the crucial encounter with Spain, all eyes will be on whether Uruguay can put aside the reported internal tensions and deliver on the pitch.
